Obituaries

A loving obituary by his daughter, Francine Rumball (nee Last):

Dad was at The Judd School between 1943 and 1948, taught by a number of retired schoolmasters because of the War…He grew up in Sevenoaks, and on leaving school spent 2 years as an Underwriting Trainee in Lloyds.

In 1950, he left Kent to go and do his National Service, in the 3rd King’s Own Hussars – 2 years as a ‘Tankie’ were often discussed and amusing stories shared.

Back in the UK, he went back into Lloyds, and in the mid 1950’s met my mother Michele, a French girl, au-pairing in Sevenoaks. They married in 1957 and had 2 children, my brother Philip and I, and built a very happy family life for us all in Sussex. He retired from Lloyds in 1996, and he and Mum settled into a wonderful retirement, splitting their time between the warm sunshine of Southern France in Summer, and the rest of the year in Sussex, on and off the golf course, gardening and attending concerts.

He attended a number of OJ events and in 2017, was delighted to be given access to the ‘Old Building’ by Robert Masters, which allowed him and mum to wander happily for more than an hour through the school, and in the old Dining Room, he was delighted to see a photo of the ‘Class of 47’ hanging alongside his much loved non-denominational ‘Grace’ (Eat Slowly, only men in rags), which was a feature of many family gatherings and Christmases.

My father always spoke very fondly of his time at the school, and was an active member of the OJ Society for a number of years, attending OJS functions and reunions with my mother Michele, whenever he could.

His humour, his wisdom and his joie de vivre are hugely missed by all who knew him.

Michael and Michele - to who he was so happily married for 62 years

This was taken before he went to Judd after passing his 11-plus

Michael in France where he spent more than 60 happy summers.
