OJ Harry Kendall, Class of 2015, Has Won a Bronze Medal at the British Athletics Championships

Harry won bronze for the Decathlon in Manchester, but he also won a silver medal at the England Athletics Championships at the end of May!

The OJ Community caught up with Harry to hear of his fantastic news and to congratulate him on his recent successes.  Harry filled us in:

"I've been training pretty much non-stop for the last 3 months, as soon as lockdown ended I was straight back to the track. It's been a very challenging couple of years, having had some bad injuries and also contesting with lockdowns and a lack of training facilities.

This year has been unexpectedly fantastic for me, winning a bronze medal in Manchester last weekend, and also a silver medal at the England Athletics Champs at the end of May. The British champs at the weekend started with some tricky weather conditions, with it being very windy and cold, which meant running the 100m and Long Jumping into a huge wind led to a disappointing first couple of events. However after that, the weekend went very well for me, and on the second day of competition I attained 4/5 personal bests, leading to me finishing third in Britain and only being 4 points off my overall decathlon personal best.

The rest of the season is a bit unclear at the moment, I'm going to take some time off to mentally and physically recover, then perhaps compete in another decathlon in September. The primary aim for the next couple of years is the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022, for which I would need to improve my decathlon score by around 500 points, which at this point is a very achievable aim."

Strangely, the medallists were given a minature bonsai tree with their medals, and we aren't sure why! Perhaps any of our readers can enlighten us?

We wish you all the best with the Commonwealth Games, Harry, and please keep us posted with the outcome!  Best of luck!
